Many parents tend to give high doses and strong medicines, to their kids, so as to get a speedy recovery, from their illness.
The main thing, a parent, shud understand, is the basic working of the immune system of a human body and the use of medicines, esp anti-biotics.
Now, we all know tat the human body, has an immune system, protecting our body from outside infections, be it bacterial, fungal or viral. The body detects, any foreign pesence and quickly produce anti-bodies, to counter it. Now, when there is a disparity in the numbers and the severity between the foreign invader and the anti-bodies, tats when a human body shows signs of dis-comfort and symptoms of illnesses.
To bolster the defensive system of the body, a doctor prescribes anti-biotics and other medicines. Mind you all anti-biotics, are not similar in nature or fashion. A certified doctor, has to diagnose the illness and study the patient and even get a brief medical history, of the patient (if they hav any known allergies to any medicines, etc etc), before prescribing the right anti-biotic, to the child. This might vary from child to child. Of course, the parents hav to strictly abide by the dosage and frequency advised by the Doctor.
Things the parents shud not do.
Now we all r busy ppl working different timings etc etc. There might come a situation, when we dont hav the time, to take the child, to the hospital or doctor and some parents try to diagnose the illness, themselves. The parents, might tend to see similarities, in the symptons and even give small portions of the remaining left over anti-biotic, which was obtained during the last visit to the hospital and which was left in the fridge. Tat is a big NO NO.
One shud never give medicines, tat were opened, but kept un-used, for quite some time, in the fridge. Even if the expiry date is way ahead and even if it was kept in the fridge, parents shud refrain, from giving such medicines and esp anti-biotics, to the child.
Simple home remedies. If the child is suffering from blocked nose and throat, use Steam Therapy.
Tat is, boil some water, in a vessel. Add a small pinch of Vicks in it. Bring the child close to the steam and ask them to inhale deeply, thru their nose. To get maximum steam and soothing effect, its betta, they cover their heads, over the vessel, with a towel or cloth, so as to get the maximum steam inhaled. Parental supervision, is a must.
Breathe in, thru the nose and exhale thru, the mouth. Continue this process for 2-3 minutes and take a break. The steam will be hot and the child wil be sweaty and fuzzy too. After a break of 10 minutes, continue the above process and keep a watchful eye on the child. The steam process can be done even during medications. But usually, if its common cold, this method wud clear the throats and noses and even save you a visit to the doc.
More tips follow, later and if any of you, hav any queries, pls feel free to ask. I will try my best to reply and give an advice with the help of my wife (who is a nurse) and from our experiences.
Gud day and stay healthy.
